I must say that the Thais are very creative indeed when it comes to valentine's greetings. Red roses, flowers, chocolates, gifts and cards are sent to love ones (including Parents, teachers, relatives and friends!). This perhaps can only be found in Thailand! Somehow, it is great even though the real meanings of a valentine's day has been missed!
What is a valentine's day???
Going back to the Roman War during Cluadius II's period;
Saint Valentine was a holy prist who detested war in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius the 2nd.
Cluadius thought that single men make better soldiers than the married one and so marriage was forbidden (banned!).
In defying the law, Saint Valentine continued to marry young couples and later, he was captured and executed on 14th, of February the year 270. He became a martyr, a symbol of love hence, the date became Saint Valantine day to honour him.
Therefore, in the western society, a valentine's day is somewhat, strictly, an affairs of intimacy between two people!, i.e. husband & wife, boyfriend & girlfriend, lovers and secret admirers. Many use the day as a proposal for their marriage.
I would be in a real trouble if my wife found out that some girl has been sending me a valentine card!, or vise versa! :lol:
It is untinkable and would not be appropriate over here to send a valentine greetings to parents, relatives, teachers or friends! :shock:
That's why I said that the Thais are so creative! :D
